What is CARB and TSCA?

  1. CARB: This stands for California Air Resources Board. It's a set of regulations by the California Air Resources Board that sets stringent limits on the amount of formaldehyde emitted from composite wood products like hardwood plywood, particleboard, and medium-density fiberboard (MDF). These standards are among the strictest in the world and have become a de facto standard in the United States and beyond for composite wood products.

  2. TSCA Title VI: The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Title VI, administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is a federal regulation that aligns with the CARB 2 standards. It was implemented to limit formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products nationwide. TSCA Title VI requires that composite wood products sold, supplied, offered for sale, manufactured, or imported in the U.S. meet these emission standards, and it includes provisions for labeling, record-keeping, and import certification.

Both CARB and TSCA Title VI aim to protect public health by reducing exposure to formaldehyde, commonly found in adhesives used in composite wood products. By complying with these standards, manufacturers and importers ensure that their products are safer for consumers and the environment.
