Materials

Maple plywood, birch plywood and white melamine. We choose these woods for their good looks, sturdiness, and eco-friendliness. They meet the strict California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards, ensuring they are safe for indoor air and environmentally friendly. This choice reflects our commitment to environmental care and delivering top-quality, safe products.

Natural Maple Plywood- It's got a smooth, hand-varnished finish and edges we tint just a bit to give it that cool, minimalist Scandinavian vibe. Plus, it’s a bit lighter in color, giving it a fresh, modern look.

Natural Birch Plywood- This one comes pre-finished from our supplier for a nice, clear look. We hand-seal the edges to enhance the layers’ natural patterns, and it's got a slightly, just slightly richer hue than maple, which really warms up the place.

White Melamine- with plywood core for all the white parts that you see in the pictures, to bring a nice neutral balance to your space.

More about CARB 2 and TSCA Title VICARB 2 is a California regulation that sets strict limits on formaldehyde emissions from hardwood plywood, particleboard, and MDF. It mandates third-party certification and periodic testing to ensure products comply with these standards.

TSCA Title VI is a federal regulation under the Toxic Substances Control Act. It establishes national formaldehyde emission standards for composite wood products, aligning closely with CARB 2. This regulation requires third-party certification and proper labelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the recommended age range for this desk?

The Lumen Big Kid Desk is designed to grow with your child. Most children start using it comfortably around age 5, though some taller 4-year-olds may also fit. As your child grows, you can adjust the chair to a higher position and add the tabletop extension, making the desk taller and introducing additional storage space underneath. When set at its higher level, the desk can accommodate kids well beyond 10 years old—even pre-teens.

You can refer to images and videos for a visual guide on how the desk adapts over time.

How do I clean and maintain the desk?

Use an all purpose spray and wipe surfaces with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners to maintain the finish.

Is the pegboard included?

The pegboard is an optional add-on and can be purchased separately.

What is the return policy?

If you or your child are not satisfied with the desk, you may return it within 60 days of purchase for a full refund.

What Parents are Saying

Who We Are

Hi! We're Ale and Jorge. Sapiens Child started in our small apartment in Vancouver during COVID, when we couldn't find children's furniture designed with true independence and purpose for our own baby.

Combining my expertise as a Certified Montessori Guide with Jorge's craftsmanship, we built a simple table and chair set.

One thing led to another. Today, thousands of parents have trusted us to bring autonomy into their homes. We were even featured on Dragons' Den!

We're still pinching ourselves and couldn't be more grateful to our incredible community.
